NANOOSE BAY — One person has died after a home caught fire early Wednesday morning.
Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department had multiple vehicles on the scene around 5:00 a.m. to a home in the 2200 block of NW Bay Rd.
Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth told NanaimoNewsNOW once fire crews arrived, the people living in the home met them outside and said one of their family members was still unaccounted for.
“Family members feared (they were) still in the residence. Once the fire was extinguished, we did confirm that one person was deceased as a result of not being able to escape from the fire.”
The fire caused extensive damage to the home, especially on the southwest corner which was almost completely destroyed.
Worth said at this point the death is not suspicious.
“At this point, no criminality is suspected. However, the cause of the fire and the cause of the person’s death is still under investigation in conjunction with the Oceanside RCMP, the BC Coroners Service, and the office of the Fire Commissioner.”
Fire and police crews were on scene most of the morning investigating.
Traffic was also diverted around the area for several hours.
