Tuesday, February 27th: Tommy James & The Shondells – Mony Mony
Today is Eddie Gray’s 76th Birthday, guitarist in Tommy James and the Shondells. “Mony Mony” was written by Bobby Bloom, Bo Gentry, Tommy James, Ritchie Cordell. Tommy James said the track was done before there was ever a title. He wanted something catchy but nothing was working until one day, sitting in his apartment he looked up and saw a literal sign! It read Mutual of New York building… just the initials were lit up.
Wednesday, February 28th: Alanis Morissette – All I Really Want
It was this date in 1996 that Alanis became the youngest artist to win a Grammy for Album of the Year for Jagged Little Pill. Overall, she won five of the nine Grammys she was nominated for.
Thursday, February 29th: Aretha Franklin – Respect
Otis Redding wrote and recorded this tune in 1965. Aretha Franklin covered it in 1967 and made it a HIT!
February 29 1968 she wins two Grammy Awards:”Best Rhythm & Blues Recording” and “Best Rhythm & Blues Solo Vocal Performance, Female”; then in 1987 she’s inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2002, it was placed in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
