First released on 17 Jul 1965. It won this artist their first Grammy, best Rhythm and Blues Recording and is considered to be the strongest influence of funk music!
Tuesday, July 18th: Blondie – Maria
This was written by the band’s keyboardist, Jimmy Destri, about teenage desire, reflecting back on his school days. It charted way better in Europe than in North America, although was top 3 in the US, only reached 28 in Canada. But in many European countries was #1 – including the UK, Scotland, Spain and Poland.
Wednesday, July 19th: Gabrielle – Give Me a Little More Time
Louise Gabrielle Bob turns 54 today! British singer Gabrielle credits her school teacher for encouraging her to write poems. She ended up turning these poems into songs. Give Me a Little More Time was released in 1996 and according to many critics, was the best she’s sounded since entering the music scene in the early 90s.
Thursday, July 20th: Santana – Oye Como Va
Carlos Santana turned 76 today! We’ll soon be able to see the documentary on him. It features never before seen music and footage, documenting his early days as a 14-year-old street musician through today. It’s called Carlos and will be out late September, 2023.
Friday, July 21st: Tony Bennett – I Left My Heart in San Francisco
Tony Bennett was 96 years old when he passed away this morning, Friday, July 21st. Among his many achievements, he earned 20 Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award. So today’s backtrack is in honour of this incredible musician. The 1962 hit “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” won him 2 Grammys in 1962 for Record of the Year and Best Solo Vocal Performance, Male.
